Criminals Failed to Rob a Gas Station in Ocean Twp.

Ocean Township Police Charge 2 with Robbery

The Ocean Township police department has arrested and charged two young men from Asbury Park with among other things, armed robbery in the first degree following an incident that took place at a Shell gas station last week.

According to the reports thus far, the Defendants, one nineteen and the other twenty, are alleged to have attempted to stick up a gas station attended Wednesday evening in Ocean Township. The gas station attended claims that one of the Defendant’s brandished a knife in his direction. After doing so, the attended claims that a physical struggle ensued between him and the one Defendant. The attended was able to fend of the one Defendant and as a result both fled the area heading towards Green Grove Road in Neptune Township. It is unclear at this point in time when the police were able to apprehend the two Defendants but they did so with the assistance of varies police officers, including the K9 Unit from the Monmouth County Sheriff’s Department. It does not appear that the Defendants were able to make off with anything of value and the attended was unharmed at the end of the day.

The Defendants were both booked in the Monmouth County Jail, which is located in Freehold. It appears that the Defendants remain in custody, most likely pending a Detention Hearing. If that is the case, during the Detention Hearing the Monmouth County Prosecutor’s Office will be seeking to convince the Judge that the Defendants must be detained in the county jail, without bail pending trail.  The one Defendant has formally been charged with conspiracy to commit armed robbery and the other Defendant has been charged with armed robbery in the first degree, unlawful possession of a weapon in the third degree and possession of a weapon for an unlawful purpose. Armed robbery is a very serious charge. In fact, it is one of the most serious offenses under the New Jersey criminal code. It is considered a crime of the first degree, which means if convicted, the Defendant would facing anywhere from ten to twenty years in a state prison. In addition to that, the Defendant’s sentenced would be subject to the No Early Release Act (NERA), which in essence requires the Defendant to serve at least 85% of their sentence before they can become eligible for parole.
