Getting a phone call that someone you love has been arrested is frightening. Within hours you’re trying to figure out where they are, whether they’re okay, when they’ll see a judge, and how to help. In Monmouth County, people who are arrested and held in custody are almost always taken to the Monmouth County Correctional Institution (MCCI) in Freehold, run by the Monmouth County Sheriff’s Office.
This guide is for families and friends. (If someone was just arrested, start with our overview of the Monmouth County jail and what to do after an arrest.) It explains how to find out whether someone is at MCCI, how visits work, the visitor dress code, and how to send mail, put money on an account, and set up phone calls. We’ve gathered the official rules from the Sheriff’s Office and added practical tips from our experience as Monmouth County criminal defense lawyers.

MCCI is a large facility. The Sheriff’s Office lists its occupancy rating at 1,328 inmates and describes it as one of the ten largest county correctional facilities in the country. It houses both people awaiting trial and people serving county sentences, and it is accredited by the American Correctional Association (ACA) and the National Commission on Correctional Health Care (NCCHC).
How to Find Out if Someone Is in Custody
There are a few ways to confirm that someone is at MCCI:
- Call MCCI directly at (732) 431-7860. Have the person’s full legal name and date of birth ready.
- Use VINE (Victim Information and Notification Everyday) at (877) 846-3465 or vinelink.com. Despite the name, anyone can use VINE to check custody status and sign up for notices when someone is released or transferred.
- Sheriff’s online Inmate Search. The Sheriff’s Office website has an Inmate Search page that was listed as “coming soon” as of late 2026. Until it’s live, call the facility.
- Ask the arresting police department. If the person was just arrested, they may still be at the local police station being processed before being transported to Freehold.
How to Visit an Inmate at MCCI
Visits at MCCI are scheduled ahead of time, and the rules are strict. Families are often turned away for small mistakes, such as arriving a few minutes late or wearing the wrong clothes. Here’s how the process works according to the Sheriff’s Office.
The key visitation rules
- All visits must be pre-approved and pre-scheduled. There are no walk-up visits.
- The inmate schedules the visit and is responsible for telling visitors when it is.
- Visitors must register for every visit on-site at the visit hall during visiting hours.
- Be on time. Anyone who arrives after the scheduled time is denied entrance to the visit hall.
- ID: Visitors registering for a visit must be at least 18 and have a valid U.S. government-issued photo ID.
- Limits: a maximum of two adult visitors per visit. There’s no limit on children, as long as they’re with a parent or legal guardian.
- Children: parents or guardians must bring the child’s original birth certificate.
- One visit per day for each inmate. Each visitor may visit one male and one female inmate per day.
- Once a visit is scheduled, it can’t be changed to another time slot that day. The inmate can request a different day.
- Nothing can be passed to or from the inmate during the visit.
- Once you enter the visit hall, you can’t leave until the visit is over.
Attorney visits
Lawyers and law enforcement meet with inmates in private interview rooms, separate from family visits. Attorney visits don’t count against family visiting, and conversations with a defense lawyer are confidential. That is the right place to talk about the facts of the case.
Visitor Dress Code and Banned Items
MCCI enforces a detailed dress code. Visitors who don’t follow it are turned away. Summarized from the Sheriff’s Office rules:
| Allowed | Not allowed |
|---|---|
| Slacks, slack suits, dresses, and suits | Overcoats, topcoats, heavy or full-length jackets (lockers are available) |
| Blazers, button-up sweaters, and suit jackets (the only allowed outerwear) | See-through, transparent, or fishnet clothing |
| Skirts or shorts at least fingertip or mid-thigh length | Tube tops, tank tops, halter tops, low-cut shirts, or tops showing shoulders, midriff, or back |
| Religious headwear (subject to search) | Hats or headgear that are not religious and approved |
| Closed, regular footwear | Flip-flops, thong sandals, or beach footwear |
| Plain, modest clothing | Bike pants, leotards, or tights worn without pants or skirt over them |
| Slit, wrap-around, or full-length button or zipper skirts and dresses | |
| Military-style clothing (unless active or reserve military), or clothing resembling inmate, staff, or police uniforms | |
| Clothing with messages that could affect safety; sexually suggestive clothing; underwire bras |
Items not allowed in the visit hall: cell phones, cigarettes, lighters, matches, food, drinks, bags, weapons, money or wallets, excessive jewelry, toys, coolers or insulated bags, glass baby bottles, baby food jars, diaper bags, strollers or carriages, and car seats. You may bring only one car key or key fob. Visitors go through a metal detector.
